  • Decade: 1990s
  • Condition: Very Good (8/10)

The IKEA FROSTA is one of those rare pieces that quietly outgrew its original purpose.

Designed by Mikkel Warnhammar for IKEA and introduced in the 1990s, it was inspired by Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60, first designed in 1933. Rather than hiding the reference, the FROSTA embraced the same honest philosophy: bent birch plywood, a simple construction and a form that works just as well today as it did decades ago.

Over the years, the FROSTA became one of IKEA’s most recognisable designs. It eventually disappeared from the catalogue, but not from people’s homes. Or their wish lists.

This original pair is made from laminated birch plywood and remains as practical as ever. Lightweight, stackable and surprisingly versatile, they’re equally at home as extra seating, bedside tables or simply as a good example of Scandinavian design that never tried too hard.

Sometimes a good design doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel. Just three legs and a sheet of bent plywood.
